Danny Kay nearly lands the big one

Danny Kay had a fantastic week at the Scottish Amateur at Western Gailes, beating some great players before losing to David Law in the final. Danny started coaching with Colin when he was 15 years old. The former swimmer was a relative late starter and had a handicap of six. Colin has always been impressed with his dedication and willingness to learn and was delighted to see this rewarded with such a great performance.

Saltman contends in Morocco

A last hole bogey cost Lloyd Saltman a top ten spot in the Trophee Hassan in Morocco. Playing in the second last group on Sunday Lloyd birdied the first and was in contention for his first win on the European tour. 4 dropped shots in 3 holes around the turn however killed his hopes of victory and he did well to fight back and post a decent finish. Colin has been working hard on Lloyds mental game and the most pleasing aspect of the week was the way he was able to recover from the poor spells and finish his rounds strongly. He still has a long way to go but he is beginning to develop the kind of mental strength needed to play week in week out at the highest level.

Lloyd Saltman wins European tour card

Colin was delighted to see Lloyd win his tour card by finishing tied 11th at qualifying school in Spain. Lloyd will now get the chance to join some of his former Walker cup teammates like Rory Mcilroy, Rhys Davies and Ritchie Ramsey by competing on the tour during 2011. Colin has been Lloyd's coach since he was 13 years old and has always been impressed with his dedication and positive attitude to the game. He is a very talented player with a big strong game that should be suited to life on the tour. We wish him well.

Julie Yang - Star for the future

Julie arrived in Scotland with a reputation as one of the worlds best junior golfers. By the time she finished her year as a pupil at Lorreto school she had proved she was one of the worlds best at senior level as well. Wins in the English, Welsh and Danish amateur strokeplay tournaments as well as qualifying for the British Open and reducing her handicap to + 5 proved that this was no ordinary 15 year old. Colin worked with Julie throughout the year and is convinced she is a future LPGA star.

Steady start for Coltart

Andrew Coltart continues to show good form as the new season on the European Tour gets under way, making three cuts from his four tournaments played this year. Andrew started working with Colin after losing his card in 2007 and has shown steady improvement ever since.

One of Scotland’s most successful players, the former Ryder Cup player’s game started to show signs of decline in 2003. From 2003-2007 Coltart never finished higher than 124th in Greens hit in regulation, the main stat used on Tour to indicate the quality of a players ball striking.

During his best years he was rarely out of the top 50 in this category.

Both player and coach were delighted to see him rise to 40th in 2009 hitting nearly 11/2 greens more per round than he did in 2007. This year has seen more improvement and he currently sits 20th in this category.

Andrew feels he is hitting the ball better than ever. We wish him well.

Academy Coaching at the Braids

The Scottish Golf Union Academy coaching for 2009-2010 is already well underway. Eighteen boys and girls have been selected from the East of Scotland and borders region to receive coaching from Colin at the Braid Hills Golf Centre.

The package consists of 20 weeks group coaching over the winter as well as individual and on course tuition.

The Academy is in its 5th year and already we are seeing the benefits to Scottish Golf with the likes of David Law (Scottish Boys and Amateur Champion) being a product of the system.

Colin is very impressed with the talent and dedication of his young recruits and is sure there will be some future stars amongst the current group.

Jamie McLeary wins on Challenge Tour

Congratulations to Jamie McLeary on winning the Scottish Challenge at Spey valley, his first victory on the challenge Tour. This win sees Jamie rise to 12th on the Challenge Tour rankings, with the top twenty players winning their cards for the European Tour for 2010.

Colin and Jamie started working together in 2007 with Jamie sitting outside the top 130 on the Challenge tour rankings and struggling with his swing and injury problems. Over the last few years Colin has worked closely with fitness expert Alex Woods to give Jamie a swing that will hold up both technically and physically to the pressures of top level Professional golf.

If Jamie shows the same dedication to practise that he has shown in the recent past we are sure that he will fulfill his undoubted potential.
